Wike downplays concerns over PDP losing states without party governors in 2027 polls

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has encouraged members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to confidently contest for elective positions in the 2027 general elections, dismissing concerns about electoral prospects in states without PDP governors.

Speaking at the 107th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja, Wike addressed fears that the absence of PDP governors in certain states might hinder electoral success. He urged party members to remove such fears and participate actively in the upcoming elections.

Confidence and Participation

Wike emphasized that the lack of PDP governors in some states should not deter members from contesting. "Those afraid that they will not win elections because they don’t have a governor from the PDP in their state, that is a lie," Wike stated. "Remove fear from your body and have confidence." This message aimed to boost morale and encourage widespread participation in the electoral process.

During the NEC meeting, Wike also assured party members that the planned convention, scheduled for March 29 and 30, 2026, would proceed as planned. He expressed confidence that all criteria had been met and anticipated that many former members would rejoin the party before the end of the following week. This optimism reflected his belief in the party's growing strength and unity.

Reconciliation and Party Unity

Addressing the reconciliation process within the PDP, Wike urged the party leadership to continue efforts to bring back members who had been expelled or suspended. He stressed the importance of conducting these talks with sincerity, ensuring that the process was not merely for those seeking tickets under the party. "It’s important for the party to hold peace talks so that those who have been expelled or suspended from the party can have discussions on how to bring them back in," Wike said.

Wike further noted that the reconciliation process should not be driven by personal interests but should focus on the genuine return of members to the party. He emphasized that commitment to the party must be demonstrated before and after the convention, stating, "After this NEC meeting, anyone who does not show commitment and comes after the convention, we will not accept that. You must know where you stand now."

Looking ahead, Wike's message of confidence and unity sets a positive tone for the PDP as it prepares for the 2027 elections. His leadership and strategic vision aim to strengthen the party's position and ensure a robust participation in the electoral process. As the party moves forward, Wike's calls for reconciliation and commitment will be crucial in shaping its future prospects.
