Abia gov Otti proposes railway line, steps up work on other infrastructure

The Abia State Government has announced plans to construct a new railway station in Umuahia as part of a broader infrastructure drive aimed at modernising transportation and urban renewal within the state. This development forms a central component of the administration's strategy to enhance connectivity and economic activity through integrated transport corridors.

The Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, disclosed the details on Monday following a State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti. According to a statement released on Tuesday and signed by Oge Christopher, the Assistant Head of Department for Information, the state is currently in advanced discussions with the Nigerian Railway Corporation to facilitate the project.

Infrastructure and Urban Transportation Development

The proposed railway station is intended to be situated near the Umuahia Central Bus Terminal. The project is designed to function as a modern urban rail corridor that integrates commercial and retail activities, ensuring that the transport hub also serves as an economic centre for the capital. To support this new facility, the state government intends to develop a network of access roads to improve movement within the immediate vicinity.

In addition to the railway project, the state is nearing the completion of the Umuahia Central Bus Terminal. This facility will serve as the primary hub for the Abia Green Shuttle Bus Scheme, which includes the provision of charging stations, ticketing points, junction improvements, and strategically located bus shelters across the city. Kanu noted that the full implementation of these services is expected to position Umuahia as a leading Nigerian city in terms of efficient public transportation.

"The proposed train station will be located adjacent to the Umuahia Central Bus Terminal and will feature a modern urban railway corridor integrated with retail and commercial activities,"
Kanu stated. He further added that when the new terminal and the Green Bus Shuttle Service become fully operational, they will provide a modern and efficient system for the state's residents.

Urban Renewal and Housing Initiatives

As part of the state's urban renewal efforts, the Umuahia Capital Development Authority has finalised arrangements to relocate traders from Isi Gate to the Relief Market in Afara. The government confirmed that compensation has been paid to all affected landowners, perimeter fencing has been completed, and the construction of retaining walls is currently underway. During this transition, traders will temporarily occupy the Okigwe Park, while commercial vehicles will be moved to the new central bus terminal.

The administration is also expanding its reach into housing and regional development. Groundwork for a Federal Housing Authority estate in Umuahia is scheduled to commence on April 21, 2026. This project is a collaborative effort between the Abia State Government and the Federal Ministry of Housing. Addressing political claims regarding the ownership of the estate, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma, clarified that the state's involvement is significant.

"The most important thing is the involvement of Abia State… we are not dragging anything with them,"
Ekeoma said, while dismissing recent criticisms as mere political rhetoric.

Further development projects are also progressing in other parts of the state. Several initiatives executed by the Greater Ohafia Development Authority, including various road projects and a new daily market in Ohafia, are currently awaiting formal inauguration. These projects represent the administration's ongoing commitment to expanding infrastructure beyond the state capital to ensure balanced regional growth.
