The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) commenced its national convention on Sunday at the velodrome of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, attracting a significant number of delegates nationwide. Despite the large turnout, a considerable internal division persisted, with key factions notably absent, creating an atmosphere of uncertainty surrounding the event’s outcome and the selection of its presidential candidate. The convention’s proceedings are expected to determine the party’s future direction and strategy for the upcoming general elections.
The convention, intended to solidify the PDP’s candidacy, has been plagued by pre-existing tensions between various political blocs within the party. Specifically, a significant rift exists between the camp led by Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State and the faction largely aligned with Minister Nyesom Wike. This division has resulted in a strategic withdrawal by the Turaki bloc, a prominent group supporting the former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara, further complicating the proceedings.
The Division Within the PDP
The underlying cause of the discord within the PDP stems from disagreements regarding the selection process and the perceived favoritism towards Wike. Sources within the party indicate that concerns regarding transparency and inclusivity have fueled the opposition from the Turaki bloc and other dissenting voices. The Hon. Yakubu Dogara faction, which had initially expressed support for a consensus candidate, subsequently announced its decision to observe the convention rather than actively participate in the voting process. A statement released by the faction’s spokesperson cited a need for a more democratic and equitable process as the primary reason for their withdrawal.
Furthermore, reports suggest that disagreements extend beyond the presidential candidacy, encompassing appointments to key positions within the party structure. The lack of clear communication and a perceived unwillingness to address the concerns of various stakeholders have exacerbated the existing tensions. Political analysts suggest that the current situation could have long-term implications for the PDP’s ability to effectively challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the forthcoming elections. The absence of key figures, such as Senator Lee Mbam, the party’s national chairman, who is currently on medical leave, has also contributed to the sense of instability.
“We are committed to ensuring a fair and transparent process, despite the challenges we have faced,”stated a senior PDP official, speaking on condition of anonymity. “The party recognizes the importance of addressing the concerns raised by all stakeholders and will continue to engage in dialogue to find a path forward.” The official added that the party leadership is working to mitigate the impact of the divisions and to present a united front in the upcoming general elections. The final outcome of the convention and the subsequent selection of the presidential candidate will undoubtedly shape the PDP’s strategy and its chances of success in the 2027 elections. The party faces a significant task in rebuilding trust and fostering unity among its diverse factions.
